Sallie Pearl Turner Mount Guy

She was born Dec. 17, 1928, in the Bronx in a hospital across from Yankee Stadium to Julius and Bessie Turner.

She grew up in Rochester, New York, and was valedictorian of her high school class with perfect Regents scores. She graduated from the University of Rochester, Phi Beta Kappa with high honors in history, where she met and married her first love, John Mount. John was just starting his career as a mechanical engineer, when he heeded a call to become a minister. After he graduated from Princeton Seminary, John and Sallie served in Presbyterian churches in Schenectady, New York, Los Angeles, California, and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He died in a tragic accident in 1960, leaving her a widow at age 31 with four young children. Six years later, she met and married her second love, Kelly Guy. They combined their two families and moved to Murray where they built a house on Kentucky Lake and lived for more than 40 years.

Sallie had a lifelong passion working with color, design and fiber. She was a professional weaver who taught workshops throughout the United States and New Zealand, and published articles in several professional journals. She won numerous awards for her exquisite linens, tapestries and clothing fabrics. An expert in Scottish tartans, she designed and wove tartans for the Presbyterian Synod of the Living Waters and also for the Gaines Center for Humanities, University of Kentucky. She loved her big family and her greatest joy was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family and friends will remember Sallie as a force of nature, brilliant teacher, loquacious storyteller with a great sense of humor and a person of deep faith who strived for excellence in everything she did. She remained energetic and active into her 90s and was fortunate to be able to travel extensively – including all the states and 29 countries. She loved reading mysteries, learning new things and was always up for playing a game of Scrabble, which she invariably won even when we cheated. Sallie faced life’s challenges with great resilience and no regrets - she never looked back. She led a purposeful life and made the most of her time here. Now that she has finished weaving all her thread, she leaves us with her finest work -- the tapestry of her life, illuminated by the golden threads of family, faith and friends.
